Coat of Arms

In 1845, the Kingdom of Hawai`i adopted a National Coat of Arms replete with symbolism. Click here for a detailed description of that symbolism. The motto at the bottom is translated as "The life of the land is perpetuated by righteousness". The coat of arms pictured above is mounted at various places on the fence that surrounds `Iolani Palace.

When the monarchy was overthrown, the new Territory of Hawai`i adopted a very similar coat of arms. Following statehood, another very similar coat of arms was adopted by the state.
