Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay is the crater of an ancient volcano, one side of which has collapsed allowing the basin to be open to the ocean. However, the opening dampens out the waves and provides a relatively protected cove in which a magnificent coral reef has formed. This is a popular spot for snorkelers and divers — too popular, in fact, causing damage to the reef. As a result, Hanauma Bay is now closed one day each week to allow Mother Nature to heal any damages inflicted by humans.
