Kilauea Point Lighthouse

Kilauea Point Lighthouse

The Kilauea Point Lighthouse sits on the north coast of Kaua`i and from 1913 until 1976 offered protection for ships sailing to and from Asia. The site is actually a narrow lava peninsula which is now part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. It is a perfect location to see Great Frigate birds and Laysan Albatross with their large wingspans floating on the updrafts in this area. If you are lucky, you might see a protected Nēnē, the Hawai`ian goose (they are an endangered species). In fact, if you look carefully, you can see two in the photo above.

The lighthouse has been preserved and visitors may climb the interior stairs to see both the giant lens at the top plus absolutely fantastic views of the Kaua`i coast. A campaign has begun to raise $1 million to restore the lighthouse. Anyone wishing to donate may do so by clicking here.
